High-performance relative humidity (RH) sensing system using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and polystyrene sulfonate mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PEDOT–PSS/PVA) nanofiber coated on top of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) chip is developed. Results show that the sensor offers easy fabrication processes and provides excellent sensor characteristics to relative humidity sensing. It offers a very promising alternative method to fabricate high-performance relative humidity sensors.

When using pressure gauges in industry the uncertainty contribution due to the calibration should be expanded by the uncertainty contributions due to specific application. There the end user must investigate these sources or other additional influences. In addition, the new challenges in terms of calibration and traceability when applying Smart Sensor Technologies and Digitally Networked Measurement Systems were addressed.

To fulfil today's requirements, gas sensors have to become more and more sensitive and selective. In this work, we present a novel method to significantly enhance the effect of gate bias on the response of a SiC field-effect transistor by placing a lithium-doped tungsten oxide film beneath the gate. This enhancement, compared to undoped samples, opens new perspectives for static and transient signal generation, e.g. gate bias-cycled operation, and, thus, increasing sensitivity and selectivity.

The paper deals with the proposal of a new obstruction flowmeter (cone type) characterized by an improved geometry. Compared with a standard geometry cone flowmeter, the proposed one ensures better performance in terms of a higher discharge coefficient and less permanent pressure drops. Additionally, several experimental tests and numerical simulations have been performed to compare the overall performance granted by both flowmeters, endorsing the superiority of the proposed solution.

Vibrations in the manufacturing process are usually undesirable. However, vibrations in the ultrasonic range can be used to enhance process variables such as forces, wear or the machined surface. Thus far, it has not been possible to detect vibrations close to the process. This prevents a stable setting of vibration parameters. By measuring strains in the tool, conclusions about the shape and magnitude of vibrations could be drawn, enabling process-oriented measurements during turning.

The work proposes a novel model that describes the combined electrical and thermal interaction that exists between two elements that share the same suspended thermal reservoir. The model predicts the change in the electrical properties that the target element experiences when the source element heats up due to an applied electric power. The current convention is to assume the interaction as ideal, but we have shown that thermal losses exist that our model accounts for.

Thin tantalum films generated by glancing angle deposition serve as functional optical layers. Serial sectioning by a focused ion beam combined with scanning electron microscopy of the slices generates stacks of highly resolved images of this film. Dedicated image processing reconstructs the spatial structure such that 3-D image analysis yields geometric information that can be related to the optical performance.

We came across some problems with the current measurement shunts while building a transfer normal power analyzer for 150 kHz within a cooperation project of the manufacturer ZES ZIMMER along with PTB, the National Metrology Institute of Germany and Bundesnetzagentur Berlin. We decided to utilize simulations with the numerical field simulation program Fast Henry to determine the cause of this frequency behavior. We found adequate justification and give recommendations for the shunt manufacturing.
